Cancer Bush or Lessertia frutescens (formerly Sutherlandia frutescens) has a long history of traditional use as a bitter tonic and herbal tea.
The common name “cancer bush” reflects its traditional uses. It does not mean the plant has been clinically shown to cure or prevent cancer.
Across several Southern African traditional-medicine systems, the leaves and stems—usually prepared as an infusion, tea, powder, or decoction—have been used for:
General weakness, poor appetite, weight loss, fatigue, and recovery from illness
Stress, anxiety, irritability, and low mood
Colds, influenza-like illness, coughs, bronchitis, asthma, fever, and infections
Stomach complaints, indigestion, heartburn, diarrhoea, dysentery, peptic-ulcer symptoms, and abdominal discomfort
Diabetes-related symptoms
Rheumatism, arthritis, pain, and inflammatory complaints
Liver, kidney, urinary, and bladder complaints
Wounds and some skin complaints, including use of decoctions for washing wounds
Supportive use by people living with cancer or HIV/AIDS, particularly for appetite and wasting symptoms.
