Sloeberries or Blackthorn Berries (prunus spinosa) are used to make Sloe gin, a fruity, tart gin-based liqueur. As the name "sloe gin" has a long historical prevalence in Europe and for this reason, in the EU it is the only gin based liqueur that can be legally called gin without the suffix liqueur.

Sloe gin is has a deep red colour if infused after distillation. The dried berries only have a bery thin layer of flesh around the pip. The pip can impart a mild, almond like taste to gin.

Sloeberries are believed to have health benefits such as improving digestion, reducing inflammation, and boosting the immune system.
